Candy for Breakfast!

just-like-reese's chocolate and peanut butter oatmeal

Just before Halloween, I elbowed my way through last-minute shoppers on the candy aisle at Walmart. Pausing in front of the large mixed packages with 3 or 4 different types of sweets, I sighed aloud. None of them, not a single one, included miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups!

Dejected, I went with the next best thing: a bag of Rolos, Kit Kats, and Reese’s Pieces. But those Reese’s Pieces just aren’t the same… I can’t nibble off all of the chocolate and let it melt on my tongue before biting into the peanut butter, not with that thin candy coating shell instead!   Continue reading for recipe.

A Celebration of Life

pumpkin scones

On my way into work, I biked past countless jack-o-lantern graveyards. People lay the pumpkins down to rest on the edge of the street after they valiantly served their purpose last Wednesday night, flickering to light the porches and welcome hungry trick-or-treaters.

Some people paid the pumpkins very little respect, barely noticing as they molded or laughing as passing cars squashed them to pieces. When it came to trick-or-treating, my brother and I meant business. After hauling in the loot, we drew a clear line across the living room carpet and dumped out our treasure, carefully sorting each piece into piles before haggling away at trades. (Mom hovered above us, not to prevent any arguments but to snatch up any nut-laden candy we threatened to throw away!)   Continue reading for recipe.

Creepy Crawlies and Cute Candy Corn

As I cruised into our shared driveway late at night a few weeks ago, I nearly slammed on my breaks. A 2-foot-long snake slithered out of our neighbor’s bushes! And a 1-foot-tall… Spider? I stopped short of the garage, untangled myself from the seatbelt, and cautiously approached the…

Spirited Sweets

“Trick or treat!” How many times in one night will a seven-year-old shout those three words? If they average around three pieces of candy per house, and they haul in an entire pillowcase full of sweets… Well, that’s a whole lot of doorbells to ring!

We don’t see very many ghosts or witches wandering around our neighborhood. They gravitate more towards the smaller houses that are closer together (less time spent walking between doors!) and away from hilling housing developments or apartment complex stairs. Which takes a lot of the fun out of Halloween—I love seeing their faces light up when I dump a huge handful of candy into their sacks!   Continue reading for recipe.
